Volunteer

There are many ways to get involved with Nature London where you can apply your energy, creativity, skills, and passion. You will meet like-minded people, contribute, and learn.

Here are brief descriptions of Nature London's standing committees.

Awards

Each year, the Awards Committee calls for nominations for the club’s various awards, receives and reviews these nominations, and makes award recommendations to the Board of Directors.  The Awards Committee also coordinates the preparation of award citations and certificates.

Banquet

The Banquet Committee oversees the arrangements for the annual awards banquet held each November.  In collaboration with Indoor Meetings, a guest speaker is arranged.  Other responsibilities include securing a venue and caterer, as well as hall decorations, audiovisual arrangements, tickets, prizes, and the bucket raffle/silent auction.

Birding Wing

The Birding Wing Committee organizes two to four indoor meetings each year featuring a guest speaker on a topic specific to birds and birding.  The committee is responsible for securing the venue dates and guest speakers, with a committee member also serving as the meeting emcee.

Cedarcroft

This committee oversees the management of the club’s 11-ha Cedarcroft nature reserve, located near Delaware.  Tasks include regular inspections, grass cutting, trail maintenance, invasive species control and cabin maintenance as well as organizing occasional club events.

Conservation Action

The Conservation Action Committee monitors and addresses conservation issues, primarily in the London area and at the provincial level.  It offers guidance to the Board on complex issues and advocates for ecologically informed management practices and public policy, as well as the protection of London’s Natural Heritage System.

Eco Grants

This committee evaluates applications and awards grants for community environmental projects. Tasks include reviewing the applications and meeting to make recommendations to the Board.  The committee meets virtually (online) and is active between January and March.

Finance

Nature London’s Finance Committee provides recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding the organization’s financial resources.  Areas of responsibility include preparing the annual draft budget and overseeing the organization’s investments.

Indoor Meetings

This committee is charged with securing venue dates and speakers for Nature London’s monthly indoor meetings, seven meetings per year including the awards banquet.  Committee members also introduce and thank the speakers at each meeting and prepare thank-you cards for them.

Nature in the City

Nature in the City is the club’s public outreach program featuring six free public lectures.  Held each winter in partnership with the London Public Library, the committee coordinates all aspects of the program, including securing speakers, arranging publicity and staffing the events.

The Cardinal

The Cardinal Committee oversees all aspects of the production and distribution of Nature London’s quarterly publication, The Cardinal.  Tasks include soliciting and creating content, choosing artwork and photographs, editing, layout and mailing.
